About 6 months ago I asked for a raise. I am happy to report that 3 months after that I received the raise I asked for. However, after I saw just how small that raise was after taxes I started to panic.
How in the heck am I ever going to get ahead in this world?
I still feel this way, but I am trying to keep focused and motivated instead of panicking and crawling into a ball like I want to do.
So I have decided that until I have enough “years of experience” (companies love that crap) for people to realize I am a fabulous, irreplaceable employee, worthy of the highest pay and most flexible hours, I am going to hustle.
Yes, that’s right. And yes, I am starting to hate that word too. When only myself and gangsters used it I thought it was cool, but now it is so overused.
What I am trying to say is that I am going to do little things on the side to earn myself some extra money and increase my income. I really don’t want to get a second job, I’ve been there, done that and working non-stop really sucks the life out of you.
The one thing I have been working on because of pure convenience is survey taking.
I don’t devote a lot of time to it so the reward hasn’t been huge, but it is actually fun and sometimes you get free products to try which is a ton of fun!
So far, I have gotten to test a shampoo I ended up loving!
And currently I am getting to try new coffees, so far they have been delicious, not to mention it keeps me from having to spend money on coffee! Two wins!
Some of my favorite survey sites include:
American Consumer Opinion
Offers longer surveys, some for pretty large amounts of money. I have probably completed the least amount of surveys on here and made the most money.
They have 15-25 minute surveys, pretty decent rewards in $ amounts to use at your favorite stores, restaurants or on airline miles. I believe this is an invite only, which is why it isn’t linked, sorry!
They have everything from 5-35 minute surveys, you can almost always find several surveys a day to participate in. A lot of their surveys are fun. You can easily earn 5 points for a 7 minute survey about what you watched on tv last night. And the best part is that 100 points=$10 on Amazon! You can also get paid through PayPal which is a feature I consider very important. I don’t need gift cards to restaurants and/or stores I never visit. Amazon I visit regularly though.
I’ve seen a lot of bloggers suggesting swagbucks and they must make a lot on affiliate income through swagbucks because I have to say, I don’t love it. I had to fill out extensive questionnaires before being disqualified and only earned 1 point for each one. You even hit a maximum amount of surveys you can “not qualify” for and stop earning that 1 point. Not to mention it just has a spammy, junky feel and tries to get you to sign up for all these websites and purchase products, which I just don’t like, but hey you may love it!
EBates Cash Back
Another thing I have been doing is shopping through EBates and getting cash back, plus you can earn money by referring people to Ebates. If you shop online like I do, this is a no brainer. It is simple and convenient. And why shouldn’t you get rewarded for shopping online?!! Plus E-Bates also offers cash back for some in-store purchases. There is literally no downside.
I recently learned an amazing EBates hack from Britt & The Benjamins. If you have more than one e-mail address you can refer yourself to E-Bates. Once you purchase something through Ebates using your new e-mail address you get both a $10 “thanks for joining” bonus and a $50 referral credit to your original account. That is $60 alone just for doing shopping you would do online anyways. You can do this twice meaning $120 extra dollars just for you!
Update: E-Bates has since lowered their referral bonus, but I still got a check in the mail this month for $50 in referral credits and cash back on gifts I bought! This is the EASIEST way to earn extra money. Go sign up NOW!!!!
I finally made a sale through Poshmark. I have a ton of clothes to get rid of, but considering the post office is never open when I’m not working, I can’t say I’m thrilled about this method of earning an income. I also only made $20 off of my sale and had to convince someone else to take my package to the post office since it closes at 4 (who is off work between 8 and 4? Stupid USPS).
While these are the ways I am currently earning extra money there are several other options
I have done this in the past for extra money, it is such an easy way to make money. I often post things for sale on Craigslist, but there are several apps and websites now where you can sell furniture.
It is simpler than getting a second job right? And you often get to spend the last couple hours watching a movie while the little ones sleep.
Walk dogs or dog sit
Sometimes dog sitting can’t be as simple as going to feed and walk someone’s dog while they are out of town. I have made $20 for doing a task this simple. Walking a neighbors dog for them can also double as exercise. Two birds, one stone my friends!
Update: I recently dog/house sat for two people and made $240 last month. It was so easy and a great way to earn extra money. It helps if you love dogs, people automatically think to ask you!
Rent out a room in your house
Having a renter is one of the simplest ways to save some money. Sure it is sometimes a pain to have a roommate, but just be selective in your choices. It is a wonderful way to get part of your mortgage paid for.
Become an AirBnB host
If you live in a touristy area this is a great way to earn extra cash. It is even more convenient if you happen to have a garage apartment or mother in law suite. But that is not required, a lot of people simply rent out a room in their home.
Become an Uber driver
Uber and Lyft have both become very popular means of transportation and they both serve as a great way to earn some extra money. This is especially true if you have a vehicle that gets good mileage.
Start a Blog
There are a lot of ways that people make money with a blog including ad income, affiliate marketing and sponsored posts. It is a much more involved way of earning extra income, but also a very rewarding way to earn money especially if you enjoy writing and making new friends! If you want to blog, but have no idea where to start check out my post, How to Start a Money Making Blog
There are a few other things I am thinking about exploring including website testing, and selling products through Amazon.
What are some of the ways you earn money on the side? I’m always looking for new ideas.
